Petulant, Impulsive Trump and the Iran Nuclear Agreement

Trump re-certifies the JCPOA (Iran Nuclear deal).

“Today, I am waiving the application of certain nuclear sanctions, but only in order to secure our European allies’ agreement to fix the terrible flaws of the Iran nuclear deal,” Mr. Trump continued. “This is a last chance. In the absence of such an agreement, the United States will not again waive sanctions in order to stay in the Iran nuclear deal. And if at any time I judge that such an agreement is not within reach, I will withdraw from the deal immediately. No one should doubt my word.”

Trump had declared in Oct 2017, that the US is no longer party to the Iran Nuclear Deal and demanded Congress create new, expanded guidelines and submit a new plan regarding Iran for Trump’s approval.  Ostensibly, Trump believed he would then force all parties to the original agreement to sign the amended treaty.

At that time I pointed out, and probably many others, that there was no incentive for Congress to do anything….and they haven’t.  Removing the US from the existing treaty, does nothing more than that- removes the US from an agreement with other nations of the world; it removes the US from the world stage; it unilaterally removes the US from activity in a contractual agreement.  There is no upside.

There’s tons of downside.  There would be zero incentive for any other party to renegotiate the existing contract.  Attempting to change the terms of the original contract would invalidate it and allow Iran the ability to walk away from it entirely.  Any newly formed contract from the US would not be signed onto from any of the other participating countries, therefore, any terms laid out in it would only be enforced by the US and would be toothless.

The best thing Congress could do is: nothing.  The re-certification went back to Trump’s desk and he had to sign off on it.  His empty threats mean absolutely nothing to the world.

It is/was possible that Trump could, if he wasn’t an impulsive, petulant child, begin organizing a future, separate treaty for other countries and Iran to examine.  A process that takes many years and actual hard work…but nah.  What actual statesmen do is they begin NOW preparing the proceeding treaty for when the current one expires…and I can guarantee you that won’t happen with this clueless administration.

It is certain that DACA needed to be addressed.  What is unfortunate is that Trump, once again, unilaterally decided to rip it up with nothing to replace it.  As it stands, it’s a tug-of-war between the administration, the GOP, and the Democrats as to what will or will not be attached to it.  It’s been reduced to a pawn.  Those near 1 million people, are pawns.

Likewise, CHIP is a pawn.  The insurance program for 9 million of our children was allowed to expire. The GOP had put forth that it’s funding should be offset by the public health fund, so that if we cannot uninsure 9 million children, then surely we must be able to uninsure several hundred thousand adults?  It’s only fair.  Someone has to suffer.  I still believe Congress will find a way to just fucking do it.

  1. I have never understood why some of our political leaders think insuring healthcare for everyone in the country is a negative thing. Why do they think it is a good idea to take away healthcare? Other countries that have strong public healthcare systems, cradle to grave, have shown the good positive effects it has for the entire country, including businesses / companies. Hugs

    1. no idea aside from it’s been an ingrained narrative much like NRA talking points that change the meaning of a constitutional amendment. The story with universal healthcare is, its socialism..and that’s bad. Like, behaving intelligently with other nations of the world is globalism, and that’s bad.
