Lying in White

We waited for you in the waiting room.
I’m not sure why.
I told your mom that you broke your arm.
Something plausible. Something easily retracted.
They said I could see you,
so I did while you slept.
With the lights on. With the tv on. With the night crew on.
You looked so comfortable.
Just so you know, I was at your house last night.
I didn’t move anything.
I fed your cat and took in the mail.
I went into your bedroom. The covers were in a curve.
You left a banana there.
I brought you your notebook,
so you could write more when you like.
I think, maybe tomorrow, I’ll go see your old professor.
The one you told me about. Remember?
I ran into David. He asked about you.
I’ll probably go to the library, so let me know if you want me to pick out a
book for you or anything else you might think of.
Call me when you wake up.
I love you.
